Reporting comprehensive income and firms' earnings management

This study investigates the impact of reporting comprehensive income and other through performance or equity statements on firms' earnings management selective sale available-for-sale (AFS) securities. The objective is to explore how Canadian firms can improve transparency by altering managers' accounting behavior switching from statements. used a difference-in-differences method in quasi-experimental framework. results showed that negative net post-period reduce realized gains losses. Available-for-sale securities also affect these losses Single statement adopters only smooth when positive are large enough offset earnings. Income (IS) reduced smoothing more than treatment firms. Managers with less job security were found be likely engage smoothing, decreased during pre-to-post period. Equity incentives tendency earnings, particularly CEOs whose pay sensitive stock price changes. Treatment outperform control predicting future using AFS per share. findings suggest manage effectively selectively selling (CI) (OCI) presented Firms win because it reduces informativeness will use strategies as long they have incentives.
